In oral and topical liquids, Celotech cellulose ethers are excellent thickeners. Because they have surfactant properties, they can contribute to product stability. In products like antacids, Celotech cellulose polymers act as suspension agents; their water retention properties are useful in bulk laxatives. Cellulose products are also used as demulcents in ophthalmic solutions.
Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose is often used as a suspension agent for suspended eye drops. It can increase the viscosity of solvent, reduce the density difference between particles and dispersed medium, and increase the hydrophilicity of particles. The suspended particles naturally settle under the action of gravity and the settling rate conforms to Stokes' law. The sedimentation rate is inversely proportional to the viscosity of the dispersed medium, but directly proportional to the reduction of the density difference between the particles and the dispersed medium. In addition, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose can also be used as the gel base of gel-type eye ointment.
